Crossing the Austrian Alps, Mind and Body Tour

  • Photo Friendly
  • 8 Days (6 Days Riding)
  • 6-12 People
Join us on a mountain of an adventure crossing the European Alps from Germany, through Austria and on to Italy. Set among the magnificent scenery of the European alps this hard but rewarding ride is fully escorted with a riding tour guide and a backup van to carry your luggage, bike bags, mechanical equipment and spares.

You will be lead by our expat Austrian Lukas who will treat you to an epic adventure via the back roads, dirt tracks, mountain passes and small villages of Bavaria, Austria and northern Italy. You will be staying in mountain lodges, family guest houses and quaint inns and eating like a local at pubs, bistros and mountain cafes wherever possible.

Exercise your body riding over the Alps while exercising your mind with mini lectures on the local beer and wine industry. Along the way, Lukas will be putting his training in wine science and beer brewing to good use, visit small family-run wineries where he will discuss the unique growing and tasting attributes of the local wine varieties and introduce you to the regional Bavarian, Austrian and Italian beers as you cycle through the mountain villages.

There is the rare gondola ride that will take us part way up some mountains (but you can ride all the way for a full challenge) and then enjoy the ride down! At the end of the ride in Italy you can either free travel further into Italy or Europe or join us as we take a drive and meander through Austria back to Munich (additional cost).

What an achievement, crossing the Alps on a mountain bike! This tour start in 2021.

The Route

Our journey starts from down town Munich. Munich International Airport is a convenient airport with many services from all over the world. We recommend that you arrive in Munich a day or two before. Take time to settle into your hotel and sort through your riding gear and or hired gear and spend some time exploring the old city at your leisure.

We will be staying in smaller, more traditional, guest houses and pensions. Often dinner is provided at the guest houses and the food is usually home cooked and the menu changes with the seasons. After riding and/or in the evening we will head to the local tavern where Lukas will give you an introduction to the regional wines and beers.

We anticipate that many of you will incorporate this bike trip into other travelling plans you may have while you are in Europe, but for the indecisive or for those who want to have a short 5 day tour of the region with a local, join Lukas as he introduces you to his favourite spots in Austria.

Day 1
Munich to Landeck (200 km)
From Munich we will travel to our trail head at Landeck in Austria (if you are already in Austria we can meet at Landeck).
Day 1
Day 2
Landeck to Nauders (42km 1100m gain)
The ride travels via the upper Inn Valley to Pfunds. Visit an old fortress en route to Nauders.
Day 2
Day 3
Nauders to Vinschgau (77km 1450m gain)
There is a lot of climbing this day but the scenery helps take your mind off the task at hand. Great views from the top of the ridge of the Orther and Lake Reschen.
Day 3
Day 4
Vinschgau to Nals (55km and 850m)
Starts with a cable car climb but there is still plenty of hill to ride up. Ride through the picturesque Nals Vineyards. We are currently searching for a suitable vineyard to tour and Lukas can give you an introduction to Austrian wines.
Day 4
Day 5
Nals to Coredo (61km, 1780m)
Today we enter Italy. Another scenic ride passing by the Montiggler Lakes and on to ride through lush vineyards to Kaltern. From Kaltern it is up the Mendel Pass and a visit to the Monestry San Romedio.
Day 5
Day 6
Coredo to Fai della Paganella (52km and 1780 m)
Ride up steep hills (again) to be rewarded with great view of the Brenta Dolomites. Enjoy the ride down through vineyards and apple orchards.
Day 6
Day 7
Fai della Paganella to Riva/Torbole (60km and 1150m)
This is our last full day of riding. Enjoy the excellent views over Lake Garda as we ride down to the lake and reflect on your achievement of crossing the Alps on mountain bike.
Day 7
Aerial view of the coast of Lake Garda and a city in Italy.
Day 8
Tour Conclusion
After breakfast we will take you to the airport or train station as required or make your own arrangements for onward travel in Italy. Or if prearranged, take our optional 5 day (non cycling) tour of this region. Let Lukas show you his homeland and the off the beaten track highlights.
