Bill is the driving force behind Outback Beds Tours. He began working and travelling in outback New South Wales and South Australia in the early 1990s. Along the way, he built lasting local connections and a deep understanding of the region’s people and landscapes.
In 2005, Bill and Cathy purchased the 4.5-star Imperial Fine Accommodation in Broken Hill. A few years later, they became active members of Outback Beds. This cooperative brings together independent accommodation providers across outback New South Wales and south-west Queensland. Alongside Pauline, they ran their much-loved hotel for around 15 years. They later sold the hotel and established Outback Beds Tours in 2019.
Since then, Bill and the team have been running personalised small-group outback road tours and selected overseas adventures. Their overseas destinations reflect the team’s personal experience. They visit places where team members have lived, worked or studied, or have strong local contacts. Most guests are returning travellers or come through recommendations from previous guests. That’s a source of particular pride for Bill.
His hospitality background has helped him build close relationships throughout the Outback Beds network, including stations, farm stays and accommodation providers. These connections shape welcoming, personal journeys. Guests meet local people and discover the places that make regional Australia special.
A keen cyclist and enthusiastic traveller, Bill loves combining adventure with great food and quality local produce. He also enjoys craft beer and Australian wine. If you’re lucky, he may prepare one of his signature campfire dinners beneath the vast outback night sky.
Bill has also lived, studied and worked in Japan. He returns regularly to explore its culture and cycling trails. He leads many of Outback Beds Tours’ Australian adventures. In Japan, he works with local experts to deliver gravel cycling and cultural tours.
